Hi Liz – I wrote you an email about this – I don’t think Copyblogger allows full republishing of articles, but you check with the Copyblogger team for details (see the contact info in my email). For a more detailed text on Pinterest marketing, you could also check out my upcoming book, “Pinfluence: The Complete Guide to Marketing Your Business with Pinterest” which will be available in just a few weeks (on July 3rd).
Hello! This blog post was amazing. It was super informative, unlike a lot of articles i read in search of advice on how to start making money on Pinterest, your page actually explains in detail. I run a mommy blog http://www.thelearningmama.com and I also have my Pinterest connected to it, but I’m having a hard time understanding the whole ‘making money with Pinterest’ concept. Im extremely new to the whole idea. Any tips and tricks for people who are just starting would be well appreciated. (:

Pinterest is no social media channel, but a visual search engine. I’ve lost count how often I repeated this mantra in the last 3 years and recently even Pinterest officials are using similar terms. In the early days of Pinterest, people would follow other users and see what they liked in their feeds. But these days an increasing number of people will use it to search for recipes, wedding inspiration or travel guides. They are searching.
Find your competitors' Pinterest accounts. With a little research, you can discover out what they are actually doing on Pinterest and learn from their actions. So, if you follow your competitors, they will likely do it for you as well. Imitation is the best form of flattery. However, in this case you might just learn some best practices that will help you promote yourself in better ways.
To put it legally: Pinterest is an equal opportunity employer and makes employment decisions on the basis of merit. We want to have the best qualified people in every job. Pinterest policy prohibits unlawful discrimination based on race, color, religion or religious creed, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, status as a protected veteran, physical or mental disability, medical condition, genetic information or characteristics (or those of a family member), or any other consideration made unlawful by applicable federal, state, or local laws. It also prohibits discrimination based on a perception that anyone has any of those characteristics, or is associated with a person who has or is perceived as having any of those characteristics. All such discrimination is unlawful. Pinterest is committed to compliance with all applicable laws providing equal employment opportunities. This commitment applies to all persons involved in the operations of Pinterest and prohibits unlawful discrimination by any employee of Pinterest.
Businesses which focus on highly visual advertising, such as interior designers, clothing companies, restaurants and many others can benefit in particular by effective Pinterest marketing. With 72% of Pinterest’s audience being women, it can be an exceedingly valuable tool for targeting specific niches. Besides Pinterest allows you to interact with your customers in ways that other social media platforms don’t.
Pinterest is one of the more versatile, affordable, and impactful marketing tools for businesses that are looking to convert more leads, drive traffic to their websites, and increase brand awareness to use. Plus, Pinterest users have the highest purchase intent of any other social media users. Let’s discuss some more ways small businesses, like yours, can benefit from creating a presence on Pinterest.
I am not paying for Tailwind’s paid plan just yet. Make sure that you have either archived or deleted your boards that have nothing to do with your niche. If you frequently share other bloggers’ work, you can create a board for that. I labeled mine “Bloggers Network”. Try to schedule at least 10-20 pins every single day, spread out on different boards and definitely start using Tribes! With Tailwind’s free account, you can share up to 80 pins to Tribes, and those should be your most popular pins from your blog because those are the ones that will get repinned by other pinners within the group. I hope this helps! If you’re struggling to nail down your niche and find your blogging voice, you can check out this post https://melissablevins.com/finding-your-voice-through-blogging 🙂 Let me know if you have any other questions!
The more boards you have, the more pins your can schedule. It also depends on the group board you belong to. If there are only 10 contributors, your pins may flood their feed. If that’s the case you just have to pop in to your boards and not put those types of boards in your schedule. I belong to over a 100 group boards, but not all of them are in my Tailwind schedule. Many of them only have 5 or 10 contributors, so I don’t pin to them or have stopped pinning to them until they get more contributors.
Pinterest is constantly tweaking their algorithm and what worked marvelously in 2014 is passé in 2015. You might notice that your Pinterest home page now features pins that are “picked for you”. What I noticed about those pins is there’s nothing exceptional about them in terms of the dimensions or their descriptions but they typically have one thing in common and that is recency.  Those picked for your pins are typically only 2 or 3 hours old. That’s why I think a critical Pinterest tip for 2015 is that we absolutely must use a tool to schedule our pins! My favorite is Tailwind but I’m using checking out Viraltag and Ahalogy. My new motto for 2015 – Always Be Pinning!

Same applies to on-site content. Google is already displaying tons of content directly in the search, Facebook also has tons of features preventing people from ever leaving their app and Pinterest is already starting with rich pins for recipes. I believe they might try to offer publishers the “opportunity” to create rich content within the Pinterest app. But no visits to your blog means no money, so you will have to look for different traffic sources or different ways to make money.
When I write my Pin descriptions that mimic the language that pinners use when writing notes to themselves, I can increase the engagement on that particular Pin. “LOVE this baked chicken recipe! Pinning for meal planning, healthy eating” is much more inviting than “Check out this baked chicken recipe on my blog! #healthyeating #mealplanning #chickenrecipes.
14. Not enabling “rich pins.” By enabling rich pins on your website, real-time pricing will accompany the images that are pinned from your website. Pinners will also be able to see if the product is in stock, where they can buy it, and if your item goes on sale. Pinterest even alerts the people who have repinned your product when the price drops! Make sure you’re enabling “rich pins.”

Think about creative ways to showcase your product and your brand visually. After studying the performance of 50,000 promoted Pins, Pinterest found that lifestyle images generally outperform product images. For instance, fashion and style Pins showing products in use in real life saw 30 percent more clickthroughs and 170 percent higher checkout rates than those showing the product alone.

Hi Robin – the best way to get people to repin your images is to create (and pin) awesome photos. So I would take REALLY good quality pics of your best work (maybe fun or particularly beautiful signs) and consider pining those. But before you pin anything at all, ask yourself if that image will be useful, entertaining, educational or interesting to your ideal clients who are on Pinterest. If the answer is no, I would keep looking.
Part of the reason behind the furniture store’s Pinterest success is that the audience is already 'engaged' in projects like décor, so the people that use the app or site are essentially already planning to purchase specific products. IKEA has also taken advantage of Pinterest's new advertising formats such as shopping ads, which has helped them lower their cost-per-click (CPC).
I used to put in hours of hard work each day to market my sites and products on Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, etc.. Now I just put my social media accounts on autopilot and I am getting even more followers on Pinterest since I started to use this software. If you are looking for an easy and hands-free way to drive massive traffic to your websites and offers through social media sites, you have found the great solution. I highly recommend it to all internet marketers.

Patricia, those are great tips too. I really wish the folks at Pinterest would get back to me about its commercial use. Maybe their initial thoughts were not for business use and now that it’s taken off as it has, they may be rethinking the rules but it would be great to have clarification because I’ll be out there creating my own business board if I feel comfortable knowing it’s in keeping with their terms!

Yeah, I’m seeing the same things, Linda – that was the inspiration for the document. I’ve also been working with my clients on getting started with Pinterest marketing, and the main issue that I see is a lack of focus or strategy. I think because Pinterest is so much fun, people just sort of leap in, pin a couple of images, and hope for the best. But strategy is just as important with Pinterest as it is with other social media tools like Facebook or Twitter.
When you follow and interact with other Pinterest users and their accounts, you’re able to initiate and maintain personal relationships between them and your business. This type of engagement has the potential to make your followers feel a level of loyalty towards your brand that keeps them coming back to your profile for inspiration, ideas, and to buy products.
