Engagement between your followers and your pins helps Pinterest determine which of your content resonates with users the most, and the more engagement your content receives by your followers the more Pinterest will show it on the site in places like search results, feeds, and recommendations. Many people have the misconception that Pinterest is this happy ‘soft’ social media site for DIY moms and brides, where everything is always all perfect and dandy. While this assumption isn’t necessarily wrong, Pinterest often flies under the radar as a practical marketing tool, to the detriment of those who fail to invest time in a Pinterest marketing strategy.
Then I edit the picture in Adobe Photoshop. This IS important. Your original image might not be suited for Pinterest as it does not get your idea across. I often extend the sky (to have some good background) or enlargen certain landmarks or combine multiple images into one. Say you got a whale on the one picture and a boat on the other, but the pin is about whale watching, so do cheat a little.
My latest Pinterest tip is to create a “Pins I’ve Clicked Through Board.” I fully believe that you are your best researcher for your audience. After all, if you are interested enough to write and research about it you should be your best audience. For many of us, Pinterest is a huge traffic driver for our blogs and websites. Honestly, when I want to know something I will generally search it on Pinterest before I go to Google.
Pinterest recommends to add multiple dots on the pin and it will perform better. Tag 3 products or more for a Shop The Look pin because then 3 pictures of the products will show at the bottom. Items under $50 are the sweet spot for Shop The Look as not everyone can afford more expensive items. Or if you have an item that is very expensive, be sure to include comparable items that are less expensive.
There is one caveat, though. They said that square pins are okay as well. Now, when I say “they said”, they are speaking from a pure UX point of view. It’s what they want because it has the least design problems. What they want and what really works are two things altogether. Google has been droning on an on how important switching to SSL is, but as of now, it still is not an important ranking signal. So, I feel you should stick to the 2:3 ratio but ever so often create different sized pins and experiment a bit. Why? Because it might be your chance to stick out!
Establish relationships with other bloggers, influencers and pinners. Instagram isn’t the only place where you might want to work with influencers. For example, Target has worked with top Pinterest accounts Oh Joy, Wit & Delight, and Poppytalk. Pinterest is currently looking into creating a tool that makes it easier for brands to work with influencers (Instagram has already done this). Working with influencers might involve creating community Boards, giving influencers products to artfully style and Pin to. If you pursue this type of influencer/Pinterest marketing, you might also ask the influencer to curate content from other creators (kind of like a style guide).
Pinterest has confirmed that this is their number one issue and they are investing in a lot of techniques to prevent these kinds of copyright infringements. At the very least, this will lead to the account being blocked. Once in a while, you may get e-mails from Pinterest saying they deleted one of your repins. This is nothing to worry about (as long as you are not the offender, obviously).
@Sean Locke – agreed. Those are exactly my points. I may have a blog and a website with images I’ve chosen to share with the world (and now I need to watermark all of them because of Pinterest), but that doesn’t mean I am allowing people to use them for business purposes. Pin them on an inspiration board for personal use – I’m fine with that. Pin them on a business-related board in order to draw visitors to their Pinterest board I am not fine with. If a landscaper’s business suddenly increases because he has 25 amazing boards of other people’s garden photos, he owes them some credit/money. He would not be allowed, exactly as you said, to grab their images and include them on his blog, website, or printed marketing materials… so I don’t think it’s right to creatively use them on Pinterest if your Pinterest board is remotely commercial. Even if the main image keeps its link back to the original source. It just doesn’t seem right.
Promoted pins are essentially advertisements that business accounts can pay for to guarantee reach to a certain audience. Any Pinterest business account can purchase a promoted pin, they look like standard pins on the interface and they work like typical PPC ads. One of the main advantages of promoted pins on Pinterest is that they actually get just as much, and sometimes even more, engagement than standard pins. Just because they’re an ad, it doesn’t detract users from engaging with the pin which is good news for brands. As we discussed at the beginning of the article, content on Pinterest successfully gains engagement and shows up as a search result for months, so the content of your titles and descriptions need to be able to withstand that test of time. Titles and descriptions that are evergreen – as in, they don’t date themselves or refer to a very specific day or time of the year – have greater lasting potential. Some content on Pinterest will be season specific, such as content for recurring holidays, and that’s okay, but think about how you can even make descriptions for seasonal pins stay relevant for the same time of year next year.
