Pinterest users typically use the platform to save ideas and products that you want to remember or revisit later. It is also used to bookmark articles or blog posts that you want to read later. Pinterest is different from other “social media” networks because it focuses more on research and inspiration. While Facebook and Instagram focus more on sharing information or posting about your life, Pinterest is for inspiration, research and buying.
Business-to-consumer (B2C) companies in general have a much easier time on Pinterest than business-to-business (B2B) companies, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible for the latter to get traction on the platform. Ultimately, whether or not Pinterest is a good fit for your business will depend heavily on whether or not your target audience overlaps with their existing user base.
Something I’ve been struggling to figure out is how to pin many pins a day, while keeping a good chunk of them as pins from my own content. I only publish new content once a week. Let’s say I want to post 50% my content and 50% of others’, I would only be pinning two pins per day (one for my new post and one of someone else). Am I supposed to be pinning older content that’s already in those boards? If so, how often should I be doing that? Firstly, only posting images of your product photos, although not an entirely poor Pinterest marketing strategy, is not ideal because it will only help you acquire a limited volume of users rather than grow your user base. To acquire volume and growth, you need to be pinning product-specific content (like product photos) as well as content that’s inclusive of your product but not solely trying to sell the product itself. This will help you create new customers rather than simply acquire existing ones.
You’re welcome Candice. Promoted Pins has now changed quite a bit from when I first wrote this article. They now have two types, cost per engagement (CPE) and cost per click (CPC). You used also be able to find out the search volume of search terms before placing an order. That’s no longer the case. Unfortunately only businesses with a U.S IP address and U.S. credit card are able to use Promoted Pins. It’s not very fair… :(
One of the many benefits of having a business account is that you can create private boards that are not publicly visible to Pinterest users, and with these, you can compose Pins that you later deploy as part of a campaign. (If you are unable to locate a Pin that you want to promote, be sure to check if it’s in a secret board, as Pins can only be promoted from public or protected boards.)
Continue to bid aggressively. The good thing about Pinterest advertising is that you only pay for the number of clicks you get. Thus, marketers should continuously measure performance and adjust their bid prices accordingly to maximize results. I’ve seen articles advising on the best times to Pin as well, but I generally take these with a pinch of salt as the content I pin spreads across International time zones. Also, you’ll find that a good pin will have a MUCH longer shelf-life than something on Twitter or Facebook. People are still pinning my old stuff months later – that simply doesn’t happen on most other social networks!
You can also pre-populate the pin descriptions that users save to their own boards with the Pinterest Save Button. You are dead on George. It is the pretty butterfly of the moment. I do believe people hang out there a lot and I do believe it drive traffic. But I don’t have faith that already saturated people can split their time with yet another platform. I am to the point where I am recommending to people – if you want to try out a new platform figure out which platform you are willing to give up. You can jump on Pinterest just because your friends are on there.
Be sure to avoid board names that are more cute than descriptive. It is more important that your boards get found than to have a cute name. If you need some help thinking of optimal names for your boards, think about the keywords you might use to search for a certain topic. You can also take a look at the keywords on your website or the categories on your blog for more ideas on how to name your boards.
You should also repin content that your audience would like to your boards. No matter how much content you create, your audience will want more. Repinning other people’s content helps give that to them. It also helps build rapport with those whose content your repinning to share with your audience. You should view your social media content as being a resource to those that follow you, so give them valuable content, both yours and others.
When you follow and interact with other Pinterest users and their accounts, you’re able to initiate and maintain personal relationships between them and your business. This type of engagement has the potential to make your followers feel a level of loyalty towards your brand that keeps them coming back to your profile for inspiration, ideas, and to buy products.
